Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (substitute with oat flour for gluten-free treats)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin (ensure it's pure pumpkin and not pie filling)
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter (make sure it's xylitol-free)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Optional Add-ins

  • 1/4 cup dried parsley (for fresh breath)
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots or sweet potato (for an extra health boost)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened apple sauce (for added moisture and fiber)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius).
  2. Mix the dry ingredients. In a large bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, salt, and ground cinnamon.
  3. Add the wet ingredients. Whisk the eggs, pumpkin, and peanut butter in another bowl until smooth. If using any optional add-ins like parsley or shredded carrots, mix them into the wet ingredients now.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients. Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until thoroughly combined. The dough should be stiff but pliable.
  5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick. Use cookie cutters to cut into shapes, or simply cut into squares with a knife.
  6. Place the treats on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Bake for about 25-30 minutes until the surface is dry and the treats are hard.
  8. Cool on a rack and ensure the treats are completely cool before storing.

Storing Your Homemade Dog Treats

Keep the dog biscuit batch in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months for longer freshness. This recipe offers a great way to incorporate healthy dog treats into your pet's diet.

The pumpkin is great for your dog's digestion and provides a healthy dose of fibre, while the peanut butter adds a palatable source of protein. These healthy dog treats can also serve as effective and appealing dog training treats or calming treats for dogs when you want to encourage calm behaviour.
